You will often see fixed hour estimates online, but actual growth depends on temperature, humidity, material type, contamination and how wet the material became. A more useful approach is to treat persistent moisture as the risk factor rather than waiting for a specific clock threshold.

Hidden moisture is the main reason mould catches people by surprise

Carpet may feel dry while underlay remains wet. A wall surface may look normal while insulation or timber inside the cavity is damp. Moisture mapping helps identify these less obvious areas before odour or visible growth becomes widespread.

What to do after a leak

Stop the source, remove free water and begin controlled drying. Keep affected materials accessible to airflow where appropriate and avoid painting or closing cavities until moisture levels are understood.

If visible mould is already present, avoid aggressive dry brushing or methods that unnecessarily disturb spores and particles into occupied areas.

When remediation is different from simple cleaning

Small surface spotting caused by temporary condensation is not the same as mould affecting porous building materials after prolonged water damage. Remediation considers the material, extent, moisture source and need for containment or HEPA filtration.
