Water Damage Insurance Documentation: What to Photograph and Record
A simple evidence checklist for homeowners, strata managers and businesses after a water damage incident.
Record when the incident was discovered, when the source was stopped, when emergency calls were made and when mitigation started. A basic timeline makes it easier to explain what happened later.
Create a simple timeline
Record when the incident was discovered, when the source was stopped, when emergency calls were made and when mitigation started. A basic timeline makes it easier to explain what happened later.
Photograph the source and the spread
Take wide room photos, closer images of affected materials and photos of the likely source. Include adjoining rooms if water may have travelled under flooring or through walls.
Keep restoration readings and reports
Moisture readings and progress notes help show why drying equipment was installed and when materials were considered dry enough to move to the next stage.
Record contents before disposal
If damaged contents need to be removed, photograph them first and keep a simple item list where practical. Do not keep unsafe contaminated items inside the property simply for evidence.
Separate emergency mitigation from final repairs
Extraction and drying prevent further damage. Building repairs restore finishes and structure afterwards. Keeping invoices and scopes separated can make the sequence of work easier to understand.
Ask your insurer about policy-specific requirements
Coverage, excesses and approval processes vary between policies. Restoration documentation can support the claim, but only the insurer can confirm what is covered under the specific policy.
